Located in the Superior National Forest, nestled between the Boundary Waters Canoe Area & Voyagers National Park, Lake Vermilion is known to the Chippewa as the "Lake of the Sunset Glow". It covers 40,557 acres and has over 1200 miles of shoreline including that of the 365 plus islands and a maximum depth of 76 feet. The DNR maintains the lake with a well-managed Walleye hatchery, Northern rearing ponds, and Muskie stocking programs. Walleye fishing is the most popular on the lake and is considered to be among the best in the country with Northern Pike, Muskie, and Smallmouth Bass a close second. The lake is also excellent for Perch, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass and Crappie. |
